WHAT WILL WE DO?

This is really an appeal to all of you.

Cindy related an anecdote that struck me.  She said that in a conversation she had mentioned that a fear of hers was that another “terror” incident would take place in late October or early November and that Bush would declare martial law and cancel elections.

The man with whom she was speaking replied that this is America and we would never stand for that.

She asked him what made him think we would not.  We have stood for fraudulent elections, the invasion and occupation of another country without cause, for torture, for killing of civilians, for illegal imprisonment, for domestic wire taps without warrants, for secret prisons.

It is a sobering picture.

Then, later she said that today there are thousands of people who are visibly resisting the course Bush has set us on, but that we need to be millions.  It is true that 67% of the American population say they are against the war and disapprove of the Bush administration.  But most of those people are not visible.

So the challenge is what will we do?  Will we stand for more of this or will we finally stand up for our democracy, for the rule of law, for the restoration of our democracy at home and good relations with our former allies and the rest of the world abroad?

Posted at the Crawford Peace House is this poem from a German pastor during the Nazi years:

They came first for the Communists,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant.

Then they came for me,
and by that time no one was left to speak up.

Will you speak up now?

Nancy
